OppiKoppi Music Festival

The OppiKoppi music festival was held for the first time in 1994 with 27 local talents performing to a small crowd of enthusiasts. It has since grown to one of South Africa's most popular music festivals, attracting anything from 5,000 to 15,000 people.

Although the initial focus was on rock music, OppiKoppi now hosts a variety of genres, including jazz, world music, house music, ska, folk, blues, drum n' bass, funk, kwaito, comedy and all else in between. Although the music is mostly South African, the line-up always includes a few international bands.

The festival takes place bi-annually. The smaller Easter festival takes place during April over the Easter weekend and is preferred by many music lovers for its intimate feel, with only one stage being used. The main OppiKoppi festival takes place in August over four days on four different stages and includes a variety of the best South African music has to offer.

OppiKoppi is a colloquial abbreviation of the Afrikaans phrase "op die koppie", which literally means "on the hill". The name describes the unique setting of the festival - at the foot and on top of a hill on a farm in the middle of the bushveld near the small town of Northam, Limpopo.

OppiKoppi-lovers like roughing it, camping in tents and cars, and eating boerewors rolls for breakfast, lunch and supper. However, for the less adventurous, there is also a "luxury" option offered by the Kreef Hotel, which ensures music lovers not only of a great line-up, but also a pre-erected tent, mattresses and breakfast.
