The great Usutu river is Swaziland's largest river and although the river changes dramatically from full to low water levels there are always a selection of Grade 2 to 4 rapids to be attempted.
The river is wide and at lower water levels winds its way in between numerous islands and sandbanks. The location is extremely scenic with tall mountains and forested river banks, interspersed occasionally by rural Swazi Homesteads.
Trips vary in length and itinerary, depending on river conditions. The longest distance covered is 15km and the shortest 4km. In winter the trip is split into a morning of rafting and an afternoon of abseiling (mountaineering). All trips start with a thorough safety briefing and flat-water stretch for practising technique.
Participants paddle and portage their own boats and must be prepared for vigorous activity. The capsizing of the raft is an almost certainty in certain areas of the river and participants are well briefed and prepared for this eventuality.
The abseiling is conducted on a 15m high cliff alongside the Bulunga waterfall and involves the participant lowering him or herself down the cliff by means of a figure-8 apparatus. The activity is controlled by the guide who attaches a safety line to all participants preventing accidental falls.
A picnic lunch is served normally at the Bulunga Falls. The trip ends with sun downer drinks, as the sun dips down behind the Mabukabuka mountains. Half and full day trips are done by Swazi Trails departing from Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary 08h00 on a daily basis. A minimum number of four persons are required and transport can be arranged from all major hotels and guest houses.
