After 20 years of stolen visits to the sunny South African shores, this Swiss couple finally succumbed to their love and bought a plot deep in the heart of the Winelands. It is a very special and wonderful place in the middle of the Cape Winelands. Its sounds, its aromas, its colours and textures. And here, they produce their very own personal red wine from Merlot grapes, trying to express all this beauty.
At Bein Merlot the wine is the product of hands-on love and a single plot vineyard. They openly confess that their heart belongs to the vineyard. Throughout the year they manicure the canopy in endless hours to perfection, aiming at creating optimal conditions for perfect ripening.
The cellar at Bein Merlot is designed for an optimal processing of fruit and wine, the careful planning resulted in a cellar in which to work is a great pleasure. There are no fancy gadgets, though all the tools are of modern standard to mature the young wine to perfection.
At harvest, the bunches are carefully handpicked, with a stringent selection and sorting of the berries already in the vineyard before it is transported in small 15 kg crates, guaranteeing that only the best and undamaged fruit makes it into the cellar. Here, the fruit is controlled again on a sorting table, then destemmed, slightly crushed and finally fermented in stainless steel fermenters.
And last but not least, visitors are now also welcomed in their own beautiful tasting room with its stunning views.
