
Botshabelo - "Place of Refuge" - is a diverse place. Visitors discover a place with a colorful heritage, unique vegetation that is endemic to the area, a variety of game, a rich cultural mix, economic activities, examples of Western and African architecture and art, various activities and events.
Botshabelo is a place where the visitor can take refuge from the busy city life and the stress of daily responsibilities. Visitors can relax under age old trees within walking distance from the game viewing areas, close to the tranquility of the Klein Olifants River or known in the local language as the Mhluzi.
The Historical Village of Botshabelo is a congregation point for tired travelers (a typical "trading post) enjoying a refreshing meal and beverage in the village and experiencing the lifestyle of a bygone era - blacksmiths, wagon makers, handcraft artists, African rhythm, horse back riders, traveling on a horse cart, posting letters in a post box, trade in a general dealer shop, sleep in a Ndebele hut or a missionary house dating back to the early 1900's, etc.
Apart from the historical setting Botshabelo offers a variety of activities for families and the youth - village tours, cultural entertainment, abseiling, tubing on the river, horse back rides, mountain bike trails, 4x4 trail, obstacle course for horses, a zip line in the gorge, archery, sleeping in a typical ox wagon laager, paint ball, game viewing on horse back or game viewing vehicle.
The Ndebele Open-Air Museum offers a window to Ndebele life, art and history. Here in depth research was done on Ndebele home construction and based on oral tradition, it was possible to reconstruct examples of what nineteenth century Ndebele architecture was like and these have been replicate at the museum. At Botshabelo there are fine examples of Ndebele mural art, beadwork and feminine finery.
