South Africa is a country rich in cultural diversity and has commonly been referred to as the “rainbow nation”. This assortment in South African culture makes South Africa one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world.

From theatre to dance, opera to cabaret, fine art to craft art, classical music to jazz, poetry readings to lectures, every art form is represented in all main cities and larges towns.

The visual arts have a rich history in South Africa and several art galleries provide opportunities for well-known and lesser known artists to show-case their talents. The theatre scene in South Africa offers anything from drama to opera or dance to cabaret in the numerous theatres across the country. 

Add to that a multitude of festivals, and any time of the year in South Africa offers the full range of theatrical experiences. The annual National Arts Festival in Grahamstown - which has showcased the cream of the country's creativity in the performing and graphic arts for over 30 years - has spawned a variety of smaller festivals all over the country, each with its own particular personality.
