South Africa is a country rich in history that dates back to some of the earliest human settlements in the world. Visit the numerous historical sites that will tell the story of our past, celebrate the country’s achievements and contribute to redressing past inequities.

The evolution of mankind can be traced through some of South Africa’s World Heritage Sites. See the birthplace of modern man, interpret ancient societies through rock art, visit an ancient trading kingdom and encounter one of the few remaining semi-nomadic cultures. And picture them all in natural environments as pristine as once they were.

Historical monuments and memorials as well as the museums, such as the Apartheid Museum and Robben Island will give you a glimpse of the violence of South Africa's past and the miracle of our reconciliation. Wander back in time as you visit historical places and towns of both historical and cultural importance.

The oldest mission station on the continent of Africa can be found at Genadendal (1738). It was one of the most progressive communities at the Cape during the 19th century. Typical 19th Century self-sustaining mission villages dating back to the pioneer days can be seen across the country.

The oldest existing church in South Africa can be seen in Cape Town. The Grootte Kerk dating back to the 1800’s is one of the many historical churches and mosques in the country.

With the kaleidoscope of cultures and history dating back for centuries, South African heritage has much to offer the historically interested visitor.
