South Africa is a country rich in
history that dates back to some of the earliest human
settlements in the world. Visit the numerous historical
sites that will tell the story of our past, celebrate the
country’s achievements and contribute to redressing past
inequities.
The evolution of mankind can be traced
through some of South Africa’s
World Heritage Sites. See the birthplace of modern man,
interpret ancient societies through rock art, visit an
ancient trading kingdom and encounter one of the few
remaining semi-nomadic cultures. And picture them all in
natural environments as pristine as once they were.
Historical
monuments and memorials as well as the
museums, such as the
Apartheid Museum and
Robben Island will give you a glimpse of the violence of
South Africa's past and the miracle of our reconciliation.
Wander back in time as you visit
historical places and towns of both historical and
cultural importance.
The oldest mission station on the
continent of Africa can be found at
Genadendal (1738). It was one of the most progressive
communities at the Cape during the 19th century. Typical
19th Century self-sustaining
mission villages dating back to the pioneer days can be
seen across the country.
The oldest existing church in
South Africa can be seen in Cape Town. The Grootte Kerk
dating back to the 1800’s is one of the many historical
churches and mosques in the country.
With the kaleidoscope of cultures and
history dating back for centuries, South African heritage
has much to offer the historically interested visitor. |
