If you are into crawling around in muddy, dark holes and tunnels with only a candle in your hand, this one’s for you.
A broad band of Dolomitic rock occurs less than a kilometre west of Sabie. It contains a large number of caves on private land.
One of the largest caves in the area is the Lone Creek cave. It is not a tourist cave, but it is (unofficially) open to the public. It is situated just off the main road on the way to Lone Creek Falls - 7 km from Sabie.
Caving by Candle Light entails a 2 - 3 hour adventure in the Lone Creek Caves which are virtually unused by humans so you will not feel like just another tourist. Operators will arm you with an over-all, helmet and 1 candle for this muddy activity. They will take you through some tunnels where you can walk upright into a few large chambers; down muddy bumslides and through smaller tunnes such as the drain-pipe where you will be required to Snake Slither your way out.
Please bring along old clothes and a pair of shoes. The over-all will keep most of the mud of you but you still get a bit dirty underneath.
