Chamberlain Bird Sanctuary is probably the weirdest bird sanctuary you'll ever visit. First the entrance is free, but there is a small price to pay for keys to open the gate to the sanctuary.
The greater Gauteng region, including Pretoria and Johannesburg, is home to over 5000 birders. While often overlooked by birders on their travels further afield, the Gauteng region, with its diversity of natural and modified habitats, offers overs 450 bird species. Many specials, including 80 endemics/near-endemics, are more easily seen here than anywhere else on Earth!
Chamberlain Bird Sanctuary is probably the weirdest bird sanctuary you'll ever visit. First the entrance is free, but there is a small price to pay for keys to open the gate to the sanctuary. The gate leads you to a bird hideaway. The key is available from Seniordal Old Age Home which is on the corner of Kieser and Chamberlain Streets.
Visitors are required to arrange with the Nature Conservationists to open the bird hide. This is definitely for the adventurous, but don't be put off, it is well worth the effort.
