Friends of the Rail has painstakingly restored into service a variety of ex-South African Railways steam locomotives. If you are part of a social group looking for a day out, Friends Of The Rail (FOTR) can organize the hire of a private train, or private hire of coaches on one of their regular trains, at special discount prices - or even arrange catering and other useful facilities at a variety of different destinations.
Take a trip back in time on our authentic, restored vintage steam train. Set out at 8:30 am, from our private Hermanstad depot (with free safe parking) in the cool of a beautiful highveld summer's morning for a fabulous 2.5-hour train ride to Rayton and Cullinan. Disembark at Rayton to enjoy lunch in the warm sunshine at Willem Prinsloo Farm Museum, or else stay on the train all the way through to the historic Cullinan village and enjoy lunch at a restaurant under the oak trees in the old mining village where the world's largest diamond was found.
Alternatively, bring your picnic basket along and braai with us (braai fires are provided free). The return departure is at 3:00 pm. You arrive back in our depot at about 5:00 pm, having enjoyed a great fun day out with the whole family.
