The Gertrude Posel Gallery, at the University of the Witwatersrand, features several important collections of South African and traditional African art including photography and traditional African craft. The South African Collection includes works by major historical and contemporary artists and incorporates several important donations.
These contributions include the Schlesinger Collection, a comprehensive collection of works by South African artists such as J.H. Pierneef and Irma Stern, which was donated to the University in 1979.
Also unique is The Sowetan Collection of over 300 drawings and sketches by Gerald Sekoto, supplemented by an ongoing annual donation of contemporary artworks by Linda Givon, and the African Art Collections series comprised of the Standard Bank Collection of African Art, the University Art Galleries' Collection, and the Department of Social Anthropology Collection.
As a further part of the African collection, visitors can also view the Burton Collection from the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as a few small, but important collections from Borneo and Melanesia.
