The Johannes Stegnmann Art Gallery is situated at the Sasol Library on the campus of the University of the Free State and exhibits not only student art, but also works by other well-known artists. This was the first gallery used for all exhibitions on campus.
Since 1983, when an art gallery space formed part of the new library building, the old gallery became the permanent display of perhaps the best series painted by the late Frans Claerhout – Catcher of the Sun/Sonnevanger, also known as his Africa Symphony.
The gallery's permanent collection includes art by old South African masters (dating as far back as 1929) alongside a specialised collection of work by the Bloemfontein group and artists from Thaba'nchu and other surrounding towns. The annual Absa L'Atelier Regional Selection show and student exhibition are hosted by the gallery.
