A rich diversity of birdlife abounds on the farm where agriculture and dairy-farming are practiced (such as no-till farming) in harmony with birds, antelope and many other species.
The Gartmore Farm is home to The Karkloof Conservation Centre and offers two world-class bird hides that have been built for your birding needs.
The special species that are found at the hides and on the farm include Blue Cranes, Grey Crowned Cranes, Wattled Cranes, Southern Bald Ibis, African Fish Eagles, Lesser Moorhen(KZN rarity), Baillon’s Crake and in wetter years, the Lesser Jacana. The centre boasts a bird list of over 180 birds.
The centre is also a tourism office for the Karkloof where accommodation and sights to see can be recommended. There is a tranquil picnic and braai area as well as a golf cart which is readily available for the elderly. The centre has an aQuelle pit-stop for cyclists training in the area.
