Loftus Versveld Stadium is situated east of downtown Pretoria in the heart of the Pretoria/Tswane municipality, and north of Johannesburg as part of the greater Gauteng metropolitan area.
This is probably the oldest formal sports facility in the country, with its first use as such in 1906, and its first major upgrade in 1928 as part of the All Blacks rugby tour of South Africa that took place that year. The stadium is designed to host 49 000 spectators and the stadium also has a media centre in place.
The Stadium has undergone many renovations in preparation for the 2010 FIFA Soccer Worldcup. A new roof over the eastern pavilion has been erected, as well as ablution facilities and new turnstiles. The floodlights, sound system and scoreboard at Loftus Versfeld were upgraded.
Loftus Versfeld Stadium is the homeground of the Sundowns Football Club, one of South Africa’s premiere professional clubs. Since 1977 Loftus Versfeld has undergone many renovations and the four major stands have been completely rebuilt.
