The Waterkloof 4x4 Route and trail at Onverwacht Flora and Eagle's Nest is 15 km from McGregor and 1km from the Boesmansklooftrail/Die Galg to Greyton.A two hour drive from Cape Town via Worcester onto the scenic Route 62, via Robertson and then through McGregor brings you to what is often called, “The Road To Nowhere”, what could very well be just a drive through farmlands, has a semi dead end with a surprise.
The Waterkloof 4X4 Route and Trail goes down in to the Waterkloof on the Oosthuizen’s Farm(Japie and Sandra). This Grade 1-2 route should only be attempted with a 4x4 as there are many loose stones on the steepest part of the ascent that make the journey back virtually impossible to do without a 4x4 vehicle. You can also do the route with a mountainbike or just hike and enjoy the fauna and flora of the Riviersonderendmountains and the Boesmanklooftrail/Die Galg
The route starts about 2km on the main road to McGregor below Onverwachtflora with the famous Boesmansklooftrail /The Galg to Greyton on your right side - this is the start of the Boesmansklooftrail for hikers. To reach the bottom of the valley/kloof it is about 1km further down. It is no surprise to see Klipspringers grazing on the mountain slopes. Birds of prey and many other smaller birds can be sighted here and occasionally the baboons can be heard calling.
There is enough space to park and to turn around in the river bed. One can also picnic down there but please remember to take all your rubbish/waste out with you. The silence down there is almost deafening as all one can hear are the bird calls, the gurgling of the water and the occasional airplane that goes past.
There are Green striped frogs and fishes, about 10cm long, in the stream. It is another one of those amazing places when one can be at Peace with the World and forget all about life’s daily tribulations.
Come and enjoy our paradise situated 15km from McGregor to Onverwachtflora. For overnight facilities you can contact Japie and Sandra Oosthuizen.
