The Middelvlei range consists of a Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage, a Pinotage Merlot blend, as well as a lightly wooded Chardonnay. With recent new releases Middelvlei Estate has neatly book-ended their expanded range of premium red wines by adding Middelvlei Red Falcon at the bottom and Momberg at the top.
The two export ranges are called Hagelsberg and Brick Road. The story of Hagelsberg dates back to 1679 when Simon van der Stel, then governor of the Cape, first discovered the fertile valley of Stellenbosch, which he later named after himself.
His first view of one of the hills surrounding the valley was in stormy weather and he appropriately named it Hagelsberg - in Dutch “hagel” means hail. The name soon changed to Papegaaiberg, as it is still known today. The beautiful vineyards of Middelvlei stretch along the northern slopes of the same Papegaaiberg.
The wine tasting centre, a charming building that was once the horse stable, is open for wine tasting and sales from Monday to Saturday: 10h00 – 16h30.
Middelvlei offers a unique barrel tasting experience. This includes an informative cellar tour, a tasting from the barrels, and a tasting of Middelvlei's elegant wines, served with biltong, cheese and water biscuits.
