Museum Africa is Johannesburg`s major history museum. The permanent displays focus on urban life in Johannesburg since the discovery of gold, with themes such as mining and domestic labour, shack life and township jazz. Mahatma Gandhi’s role in the fledgling city is covered, as is the historic 1956 Treason Trial when Mandela was jailed in The Fort.
Museum Africa carries a variety of exhibits, most of which pertain to the rich history of Africa, including its ancient cultures. Of special interest to African Origins are displays that capture fossil evidence of early humans and Stone Age and Iron Age communities that lived in the Johannesburg area.
It also houses the Museum of South African Rock Art, that showcases unique rock paintings and engravings. The role of rock art in Bushman social and religious life is explained in a reconstructed rock shelter.
The Museum is open from 09:00 - 17:00, Tuesday to Sunday.
