Nestled on the South Coast and overlooking the warm Indian Ocean, Umkomaas is the home of the world famous Aliwal Shoal. As one of the premier dive spots in South Africa and rated as part of the top 10 in the world, they have a lot to offer you! Each season on the Shoal offers something special for divers and snorkellers alike.
On 1st June 2009 Oceans Alive Diving and Quo Vadis joined forces to create Oceanworx, a fantastic new scuba diving charter situated on the same premises as Sea Fever Dive Lodge and Hidden Reef Restaurant in Umkomaas. They are ideally located for daily charters to Aliwal Shoal and the two nearby wrecks 'Nebo' and 'Produce'.
They dive the World Famous Aliwal Shoal where the Aghulas Current runs south along the east coast of Africa and brings with it warm water, nutrients and a huge diversity of tropical sea life.
From June to November, Aliwal Shoal is famous for its Ragged Tooth Sharks. The sharks typically congregate in coastal waters, at depths of between 60 and 190 m, although deeper depths have been recorded. Although they are harmless, they have an imposing appearance and their ferocious set of teeth is impressive. They use Aliwal Shoal as a mating ground and can be seen in Cathedral, Shark Alley, Raggies’ Cave and various other dive spots.
