The Orlando Stadium was revamped in order to prepare it as a training ground for the participants during the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
Its status as a training ground helped bring the 2010 World Cup closer to many of South Africa's most fervent fans of the game. The ground, which has hosted many of Soweto's famous derbies, between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 2009.
Once a 24 000-seater, the Orlando stadium is now a 40 000-seater stadium that boasts a contemporary steel design. Apart from the world class football facilities, the ground also boats a 200-seat auditorium, a conference centre, a gymnasium and 120 hospitality suites.
