The first owner, Thomas Hartley, built the house in 1821 as a three storey dwelling with 2 bedrooms on the top floor. The In was established in 1832.
The original building remains an integral part of the Inn. Part of the kitchen walls include a portion of Thomas Hartley’s original dwelling as well as rooms 5 and 6 of this old settler Hotel.
The Inn’s name was changed to the Pig ‘ Whistle during WW ll when the Air Force was based at 43 Air School in Port Alfred.
After 170 years it has claim to genuine age which cannot be made by scores of so called ‘Olde Time Inns’ worldwide.
The Pig & Whistle has 10 beautifully restored rooms with magnificent antiques. There are 4 en-suite rooms and 6 traditional old fashioned rooms with communal bathrooms. These rooms have recently been equipped with new Sealy Posturepedic beds and linen.
