With early morning mists dissipating against its craggy upper slopes, the Kasteelberg forms a magnificent profile to the Riebeek Valley and serves as the focal point for Riebeek Cellars, which resides at the foot of this mountain. The cellar, just 45 minutes north west of Cape Town, was established in 1941 but many of its members are descendants of long-established Huguenot winemaking families, who have been involved in this industry for centuries.
The twin villages of Riebeek Kasteel and Riebeek West have in recent years become a centre of attraction as both a wine tourism destination and artist's paradise.
Riebeek Cellars is situated in Riebeek Kasteel at the foot of Bothma's Kloof Pass. This medium-sized winery on the western coast of the Cape Province of South Africa sources its grapes from the fertile Riebeek Valley and the slopes of the mountain where the climate is very similar to the Mediterranean.
Through the years as vineyard practices developed, cultivars were planted in soil and at slopes best suited to them. These well-tended vineyards enable the production of high quality wines which makes Riebeek Cellars the choice of wine buyers internationally.
