Rooihoek, about 5 km from Doodsklip, is located on the bank of the Kouga River. A short walk across the white sand takes you to the clearest water, where you can take a swim. Rooihoek allows camping in natural surroundings. Do obtain a permit first if you wish to camp overnight.
The Rooihoek campsite was recently claimed to be the best wilderness campsite in South Africa. Even though the only facilities it has are two long-drops and no water, except for the river.
Rooihoek, situated between the two biggest passes in the Kloof, is a memorial for the 1916 flood victims. The breath-taking Grasnek Pass, with its many river crossings, (make a point of counting the river crossings), will lead to a viewpoint where photographic opportunities are in abundance. Keep a look-out for game, monkeys, birds and exquisite wild flowers.
