Glassware, vases, bowls, candle holders, glasses, animal figurines, ornaments and corporate gifts crafted from recycled glass. Talented glassblowers demonstrate their skills every weekday and last weekend of the month.
Shades of Ngwenya glass blowing factory is the hub of the Ngwenya Glass Village, only 20 minutes from JHB, a glass wonderland where you can watch the ancient art of glassblowing at work and buy fabulous handmade recycled glassware.
Ngwenya Glass Village is the ideal venue for a day or weekend outing with 12 Shops to browse around. Come and enjoy long lazy lunches at all Gilroy's brewery and Zest – World of Food under shady trees while the kids have fun in the playground.
Outside the factory, mountains of recycled glass twinkle wickedly in the sun. About 500kgs of glass are crushed daily at Ngwenya, and melted down in a red hot furnace overnight, at an incredible 1400 degrees Celsius.
By morning, the glass melt is reduced to a ‘manageable’ 1200 degrees C. Then the glass-masters work their magic, drawing the glass out and blowing it into bulbous shapes.
Ngwenya Glass Village is open from Tuesdays to Sundays between 09:00 to 16:30. All shops and Restuarants are closed on Mondays except Shades of Ngwenya Glass Shop. The Glass shop is open 7 days a week 09:00 to 16:30.
