During the past three decades, The Market Theatre has evolved into a cultural complex for theatre, music, dance and the allied arts. Today, The Market Theatre remains at the forefront of South African theatre, actively encouraging new works that continue to reach international stages.
The Mission of the Market Theatre Foundation is to create an authentic South African cultural experience which is committed to providing the highest level of artistic excellence in all aspects of the performing and visual arts in which the education and development of a diverse community of artists, audiences and technicians is assured.
The Market Theatre consists of three theatres, namely the ‘Main theatre’, ‘Barney Simon theatre’ and the ‘Laager theatre’. The Main Theatre offers seating capacity for 387 people, while The Barney Simon Theatre offers seating capacity for 100-120 people and the Laager Theatre also offers seating capacity for 100-120 people.
The theatre and other spaces within The Market Theatre complex are available for rent for private and corporate functions. The theatres are suitable for conferences, seminars, presentations and product launches.
